1st Cor. 11: 1-2
Follow me as I follow Christ. Now I praise you, brothers, that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you.
'Phil Jackson is arguably the greatest athletic coach of all time, having won eleven NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers. Jackson has also been a respected mentor for two of the greatest basketball players ever in Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant and he currently holds the record for highest winning percentage as a coach. He is more philosopher, spiritual seeker, and scholar than he is a sports-minded tactician, although he is tremendously athletic on a physical and mental level in his own right and won two NBA championships as a player. At face value, this well-known depiction of Jackson is undoubtedly fascinating; however, it does not explain the exact mechanisms behind his tremendous success and outstanding leadership ability. Rather than explore what Jackson knows and try to copy or emulate his unique path, the more compelling, inspirational, and educational perspective to take is How he understands what he knows.'
I've often wondered, if Phil Jackson is a proven champion and true success, why don't other coaches and staff seek to copy or emulate what he knows? You would think there would be more people in the NBA that would adopt his methodology, but there aren't...I've seen this happen in the Kingdom of God. You have an entire slew of people who refuse to attach themselves to successful Christians. Maybe the reason is fear, intimidation, laziness, etc...but the bottom line is,there are still unsuccessful Christians who have answers available to them yet won't take it!
HEBREWS 4:2
2 FOR INDEED THE GOSPEL WAS PREACHED TO US AS WELL AS TO THEM; BUT THE WORD WHICH THEY HEARD DID NOT PROFIT THEM, NOT BEING MIXED WITH FAITH IN THOSE WHO HEARD IT.
2 TIMOTHY 2:1-6
2 YOU THEREFORE, MY SON, BE STRONG IN THE GRACE THAT IS IN CHRIST JESUS. 2 AND THE THINGS THAT YOU HAVE HEARD FROM ME AMONG MANY WITNESSES, COMMIT THESE TO FAITHFUL MEN WHO WILL BE ABLE TO TEACH OTHERS ALSO. 3 YOU THEREFORE MUST ENDURE HARDSHIP AS A GOOD SOLDIER OF JESUS CHRIST. 4 NO ONE ENGAGED IN WARFARE ENTANGLES HIMSELF WITH THE AFFAIRS OF THIS LIFE, THAT HE MAY PLEASE HIM WHO ENLISTED HIM AS A SOLDIER. 5 AND ALSO IF ANYONE COMPETES IN ATHLETICS, HE IS NOT CROWNED UNLESS HE COMPETES ACCORDING TO THE RULES. 6 THE HARDWORKING FARMER MUST BE FIRST TO PARTAKE OF THE CROPS.
The Christian life many times is ‘caught’ more than it is taught. However, in order to capture success, you must humble yourself and fall under the tutelage of successful Christians. Are you willing to do what it takes to be successful? Even at the expense of your own pride?
