Luke 13:6-9
6 He also spoke this parable: “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. 7 Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, ‘Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why does it use up the ground?’ 8 But he answered and said to him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it. 9 And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can cut it down.’”
This scripture is very personal because it speaks of a Christian who has served God for a length of time, yet has nothing to show for it. Remember, God is always challenging you and I to produce fruit. In fact, this was among the first things God ever commanded mankind:
Genesis 1:28
28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
We have been called by God to produce...let me ask you, are you fruitful? According to the text, the Master was so upset that he ordered it to be chopped down! The Vine dresser saved the day! He asked that the fig tree be left alone for 1 more year, so that he can dig around it, fertilize it, and hopefully after that, it will produce. Ask yourself, am I producing? If I am not, why? Will you humble yourself and allow God to 'Dig around, and fertilize' your heart?
You should know that the Master is Father God, and the Vine dresser is Jesus...He has mercy on us, and is willing to give us time to produce for God in the Kingdom...my friends, play time is over; it's time for you and I to step up and produce the fruit we are all capable of!
